  • Novel The New Moon's Arms receives the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic;
  • receives Canada's Aurora Award for science fiction and fantasy, long form category;
  • is shortlisted for the Nebula Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy;
  • is shortlisted for the Mythopoeic Award.


  • Novel Brown Girl in the Ring is shortlisted for Canada Reads, CBC Radio;
  • Novel-in-progress Blackheart Man receives writing grant, Canada Council for the Arts.


  • Tesseracts 9, an anthology of Canadian-authored science fiction and fantasy edited by Geoff Ryman and myself, wins Canada's Aurora Award for science fiction and fantasy.
  • Six Impossible Things, a radio anthology of fantastical fiction edited by Joe Mahoney and myself and produced by Joe Mahoney, is shortlisted for the Aurora Award.
The award was for an essay I wrote about the experience of running into the path of a moving car at ten years old and fracturing my leg.



  • The Salt Roads is shortlisted for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award\ for black writing.
  • The Salt Roads wins the Gaylactic Spectrum Award (for GLBTQ themes in science fiction and fantasy).


  • Skin Folk wins the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic.
  • Skin Folk also wins the World Fantasy Award.
  • The Salt Roads is on the Final ballot for the Nebula Award.


  • Novel Midnight Robber receives Honourable Mention, novels in creole, Cuba's Casa de las Americas Prize for Fiction.
  • Short story "Something to Hitch Meat To" shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award.
  • Short story collection Skin Folk wins the World Fantasy Award.



  • Midnight Robber is a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
