The Writers' Trust helped me to survive last year when ongoing financial crisis got crisis-er. I can't really say that this workshop I'm teaching for them is my way of repaying them, since they're paying me to do it, but I thought I'd use this space to thank them anyway. The help made such a difference, at a time when I desperately needed it.

I'm teaching one of the spring session workshops. They're all free, but space is limited. My workshop is on Saturday, May 3, 2008, 1 - 3 p.m., at the Beaches Library in Toronto, 2161 Queen Street East, East of Woodbine.

Here's a description:

So you want to make a career writing fiction. But where do you submit your work? What should you do if you get an offer? What can you expect to be paid? Can you live off writing short stories? Do you need an agent? What does an editor do, really? Will you have to give readings? How do you keep yourself fed while you're churning out pellucid prose? Will you need a day job as well? And what if you get sick? This workshop is about some of the practical realities of living as a working fiction writer.
